Hashira Shibari
or binding to a vertical post, is one of the most deeply rooted techniques in traditional Japanese Shibari. In Japan’s historical houses, beams and vertical posts were central elements of architecture, shaping not only the structure but the very essence of the space. This architecture inspired the unique rope practice of binding to a vertical post — the Hashira.
The Fascination
In contrast to traditional suspension, where you can experience subtle movements or shifts within the ropes, Hashira Shibari emphasizes complete stillness. Once you're bound to the vertical post, movement is impossible. The wooden surface presses firmly against your back, your body becomes completely immobilized, and the ropes constrain you in a way that removes any feeling of escape or freedom. The post stands as a forceful, unrelenting presence you cannot escape.
The Training
We will be learning about Hashira from the ground up, starting with the basics. In the evening session, we will cover Content, which will include a partial overview and a suspension. Our focus will begin with exploring the classic shapes of Hashira, and then we will examine how these shapes have evolved over time into more modern forms.
